⚽ European Football Roundup

Bayern Munich Crushes Dortmund 4-0, Kane Scores 3

Bayern bounced back from an embarrassing cup loss earlier this week to deliver one of its most convincing performances this season. Munich controlled every aspect of the game and was the only one to create dangerous occasions. Dortmund finished the game with one lonely shot on goal.

Upamecano opened the scoring on a powerful header, but Bayern’s brilliance shined through on a counterattack masterclass that led to the second goal. Bayern had many more opportunities, and this game could’ve ended 6-0 or 7-0 with more realism from the Bavarians.

Luckily for Munich, Kane is at the top of his game and scored two more goals to put this game away for good.

Dortmund is just not good enough to compete with Bayern. Bayern, on the other hand, looks like a Champions League Winner in the making.

VAR Controversy Gives Newcastle 1 - 0 Win Over Arsenal

The only thing anyone will remember from this game is another VAR controversy.

Newcastle scored the lone goal of the game on an action in which the ball may have gone out of play, a foul may have been committed, and an offside may have happened.

The VAR, based on what they deemed inconclusive video evidence, decided to stick with the decision made by the head referee and award the goal to Newcastle.

Arsenal controlled the ball for the majority of the match but never came close to turning pressure into goals. This game could’ve gone either way, and Anthony Gordon gave the three points to Newcastle. Thus ends Arsenal’s run of unbeaten games, as they suffer their first loss of the season.

Barcelona Scores Late Goal To Win Against Real Sociedad

Championship teams need to know how to win games they have no business winning, and this is a perfect example of Barcelona taking home three points despite not being nearly as dangerous as Real Sociedad.

Ter Stegen was on top of his game, preventing what could’ve easily been a goal or three in the first 15’ of the game. Real Sociedad pushed on but went unrewarded for their efforts.

Barcelona came alive in the stoppage time of the second half, and after Gavi failed to convert his 1-on-1 opportunity in the 91’ minute, Araujo headed in a goal between the keeper’s legs on an excellent ball from Gundogan.

Good teams find a way.

⚽ Other Games

Premier League

Fulham 0 - 1 Manchester United

A dreadful game by both teams and a comedy of defensive errors gave Fernandes the only score of the game in stoppage time.

Manchester City 6 - 1 Bournemouth

Jeremy Doku scored the first goal and made 4 decisive passes in a celebration of football in Manchester. City looks unstoppable.

Sheffield United 2 - 1 Wolverhampton

Sheffield with the honorable mention after winning their first game this season on another controversial penalty ten minutes into stoppage time. They’re still in 20th place though.

La Liga

Osasuna 2 - 4 Girona

Girona keeps on winning and keeps its place at the top of La Liga. As long as they keep winning, they deserve to keep being mentioned. They’re the story of La Liga in this early season.

Bundesliga

Hoffenheim 2 - 3 Bayer Leverkusen

Leverkusen won a tough game after initially squandering a 2-0 lead in 3 minutes. They keep their place at the top of the league, two points ahead of Bayern.

Serie A

Atalanta 1 - 2 Inter Milan

Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martínez each scored for Inter in a top-of-the-table clash. Inter widens the gap at the top of the league to 5 points, with second-place Juventus to play today.

AC Milan 0 - 1 Udinese

AC Milan lost a home game to bottom-feeder Udinese, and have now lost 2 of their last 3 games. They’ve gone from first to third, and are trailing Inter by six points.

⚽ Fluminense Wins Copa America

Brazil's Fluminense beat Argentina's Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time to win the Copa Libertadores for the first time.

Things that happened in this game:

  • A Boca player was sent off for slapping an opponent

  • John Kennedy’s 99’ minute extra time goal decided the game

  • Kennedy was shortly thereafter sent off for “excessive celebration”

Latin American football, please never change.

🏈 College Football Recap

Texas #7 33 - 30 Kansas State University #23 (OT)

This game felt like neither team wanted to win it. Texas took a 27-7 lead late in the third quarter only to let KSU come back and send the game to overtime. KSU on the other hand missed kicks that could’ve secured it the victory. It wasn’t pretty, but Texas won and kept their playoff hopes alive.

USC #20 42 - 52 Washington #5

This game was an offensive masterpiece between two teams who couldn’t play defense even if they wanted to.

Washington’s tailback Dillon bulldozed for 256 yards and scored four touchdowns. USC's third loss made a playoff spot a long shot. Caleb Williams had another amazing game but was let down by his defense yet again.

Oklahoma State #22 27 - 24 Oklahoma #9

OSU gave the Sooners a kick in the teeth in the final game of the rivalry before Oklahoma heads to the SEC. Oklahoma dominated this rivalry over the years, but OSU will savor a victory that severely damages OU’s chances of making the CFB playoff.

University of Georgia #1 30 - 21 Missouri #12

In a tough SEC showdown, Georgia remained undefeated with a 30-21 win over Missouri, extending their winning streak to 26 games. Georgia is the consensus #1 team in the country, but they have their weaknesses - namely their struggle to run the ball.

Alabama #8 42 - 28 LSU #14

Alabama's 42-28 victory over LSU was a standout performance. The Crimson Tide's haven’t looked dominant this year but offense found balance with 218 passing yards and 288 rushing yards, and quarterback Jalen Milroe set a school record with four rushing touchdowns. The defense also shined by shutting out LSU in the fourth quarter. Alabama now leads the SEC West and is eyeing a showdown with No. 1 Georgia in the conference championship.

🏁 Verstappen Wins Sao Paolo Sprint

Let’s answer yesterday’s key questions.

  • Can Norris challenge Verstappen?

Yes! At least in qualifying. Norris put his car in pole position for the sprint but was overtaken in the first corner by Verstappen. Norris couldn’t get meaningfully close once the Dutchman passed him. So…it’s a mixed bag.

  • Can Sergio Perez bounce back?

Also yes! This was one of Perez’s best performances lately. He qualified P3 and finished P3, albeit 13 seconds behind Norris, which isn’t great. But I’m sure that given his current run of form, Checo will gladly take this result.

  • Was Aston Martin’s 3rd and 4th in qualifying a fluke?

It sure looks like it. The cars had some pace but were unable to realistically challenge for points during the sprint. Alonson finished 11th, Stroll 12th.

  • Can Alpha Tauri bounce back?

Oh, happy days. Yes, they can. Tsunoda finished the race in 6th and secured 3 points for Alpha Tauri, while Ricciardo finished just outside of the points in 9th, but gave Sainz everything he could handle on track. Great performances from both drivers.

  • Can Ferrari finally unlock some race pace?

Hmmm, no. The Ferraris finished the sprint in 5th and 8th, but were hounded by Alpha Tauris the whole time. Leclerc finished 28 seconds behind Verstappen in a 24-lap race. That’s more than a second a lap slower than the leader.

🏀 NBA

Philadelphia 76ers 112 - 110 Phoenix Suns

I’ll say it - the 76ers are playing with swag I haven’t seen before. The starting four of Harris, Embiid, Maxey, and Oubre looks like the real deal. Each can contribute 18 to 25 points on any given night lately, which makes it infinitely easier for the 76ers to outlast teams down the stretch.

This is especially true against shorthanded teams like the Suns who were missing Devin Booker again. Kevin Durant was once again left to do all the work. He scored 31, but no other Suns player scored more than 13.

Brooklyn Nets 114 - 124 Boston Celtics

Speaking of the real deal, the Celtics are it after keeping their perfect 5-0 record. Tatum led with a 32-11 double-double, Brown scored 23, Porzingis 22, Holiday 18…you get the idea.

The best teams this year are incredibly deep, with 4 viable offensive options. Cam Thomas scored 27 for the Nets.

Denver Nuggets 123 - 101 Chicago Bulls

Remember what I just said about deep teams? The Nuggets have what it takes to compete with any team in the league. Jokic finished with a 28-16-9 line, one assist away from a triple-double. Denver scored 123 despite Murray, their second offensive option, left with an injury in the first quarter. Porter Jr. scored 27, Reggie Jackson who came in for Murray added 16, and Gordon scored 15 to seal the deal.

Other Games

Indiana Pacers 124 - Charlotte Hornets 125

Orlando Magic 120 - Los Angeles Lakers 101

New Orleans Pelicans 105 - Atlanta Hawks 123

Houston Rockets 107 - Sacramento Kings 89

Minnesota Timberwolves 123 - 95 Utah Jazz

👊 UFC: Almeida Dominates Lewis

Well, that was underwhelming.

Almeida did what he needed to do to secure the W: take Lewis down and keep him there. Almeida was in control on the ground for 21 minutes and 10 seconds, a new UFC heavyweight record. Unfortunately, even while in control, Almeida didn’t do much to submit or hurt Lewis in any way.

This was a classic case of winning the fight but losing the entertainment battle. Not many people tune in to see two 230+ pound men just chill on top of one another.

This was the first decision win of Almeida’s career, so we’ll give him a pass. But let me tell you - fights like these will not help sell future PPVs headlining Almeida.

🏈 NFL Week 9

Miami Dolphins (6-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (6-2)

THE game of the week, as two AFC contenders go toe-to-toe in Germany.

The Chiefs face the challenge of defending their former star receiver, Tyreek Hill, who's been on fire this season and is on his way to the single-season receiving record.

Seattle Seahawks (5-2) at Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

When the Ravens are on, they’re looking unstoppable this season. But they’ve also dropped games to the Steelers and Titans. The Ravens’ defense is arguably its best statistically since 2000.

Seahawks will try to run the ball to take off pressure from QB Geno Smith, who has thrown 5 INTs in his last 3 games. He can’t afford to throw multiple picks against the Ravens, who have the league’s leader in INT Geno Stone with 5 picks.

Dallas Cowboys (5-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (7-1)

There’s no love lost between these two rivals of the NFC East, and this is a straight-up battle for the division lead. Dallas and Philly have two of the best offenses in the game, scoring 28.1 and 28 points a game respectively. This game should have fireworks - and then some.

Buffalo Bills (5-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (4-3)

One of these early-season contenders is about to register their fourth loss this season. Neither team has looked as good as we expected them to, although both teams seem to be turning it around now. Only one will continue its positive momentum.

Allen has thrown an INT in each of his last four games and his coming into this game with a nagging shoulder injury. If there was ever a time for the Bengals to pounce - it’s now.

Other Games

Los Angeles Chargers (3-4) at New York Jets (4-3)

New York Giants (2-6) at Las Vegas Raiders (3-5)

Indianapolis Colts (3-5) at Carolina Panthers (1-6)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4) at Houston Texans (3-4)

Chicago Bears (2-6) at New Orleans Saints (4-4)

Washington Commanders (3-5) at New England Patriots (2-6)

Los Angeles Rams (3-5) at Green Bay Packers (2-5)

Minnesota Vikings (4-4) at Atlanta Falcons (4-4)

Arizona Cardinals (1-7) at Cleveland Browns (4-3)

🏀 NBA

Cleveland Cavaliers - Golden State Warriors

Klay Thompson is questionable to play for this matchup between The Spider and the Splash Brothers.

Dallas Mavericks - Charlotte Hornets

Luka will look to assert his dominance again and bounce back from a loss to the Nuggets.

Phoenix Suns - Detroit Pistons

Phoenix just lost three in a row, and it’s becoming clear that Durant can’t do it all by himself.

San Antonio Spurs - Toronto Raptors

Wemby Watch: After scoring 38 in the previous game, every game is an opportunity for Wemby to dominate.

Portland Trail Blazers - Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies just lost to the Trail Blazers in OT; can they finally get a win and get the season started?

🏁 F1 Sao Paolo Grand Prix

Let’s continue with the Q&A format for today’s Grand Prix.

  • Can Leclerc take 1st from Max off the line?

If he can’t, the field will need an act of god (including but not limited to Sargeant hitting the wall at some point) to take the race win away from Max.

  • Can Aston score big points?

Stroll and Alonso are starting 3rd and 4th. They need a good weekend to put up a fight and reclaim 4th from McLaren. But Norris looked incredibly quick yesterday, so it won’t be easy.

  • Can Alpha Tauri get to the points?

They’ve qualified poorly - 16th and 17th - but the race pace looks to be there, and Interlagos is a track where overtaking is more than possible.

  • Can Sergio Perez finish the race?

Yes, I’m having a bit of a laugh, but Sergio’s performance has been dismal lately. He had a good sprint but is starting in 9th, and his desperation to overtake and get back on top has cost him dearly.

The Sao Paolo GP is always full of overtakes and moves, so I expect this one to be entertaining - even though in all likelihood Verstappen will just run away with it and lead from lap 1 to lap 71.

🗣️ Quote Of The Day

“It’s an absolute disgrace it was allowed. I feel sick to be part of this. I feel sick.”

Arsenal Manager Arteta after losing the game to Newcastle. Safe to say he was NOT happy.

🧮 Stat Of The Day

The Lakers were +12 with Lebron tonight; -31 in 13 minutes without

I’ve said it before, this proves it again. The Lakers will go absolutely NOWHERE without LeBron. Imagine being outscored by 31 in 13 minutes. LeBron IS the Lakers.
